President's Notes
It is hard to believe that in August we had our 5th Annual Wine & Cheese Gala Fundraiser. I know money wise it was not the success we had hoped for, but from the political view point, it was one of the best. Besides Tim taking on a great deal to help in this, I need to thank several people for their part in making this event work. Sharon Ko and Theresa Garza-Ruiz were so instrumental in getting auction items as well as securing the location, decorations and much of the organizational activities. Nicole Kelley as always was great as our auctioneer. I am not sure if we have more fun working with her or she has more fun doing this event. Miraha, was a great help in finding volunteers and working the event along with Russ, Allison, Jonathan, Rick and Megan. They made sure the night ran smooth. We have other members who put a lot time in getting this ready, such as Eddie Miller, Shelia Ford and Mark Hays. There are several other people who stepped up to help, and I know I can not name them all, but anyone and everyone who helped thank you!!! Bottom Line—this was a group effort. The night was very special to see Louie Wright receive the “Roger A. Gooden Humanitarian Award”. But just as special was the fact that two past recipients were there to present. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II and Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders did a fantastic job presenting this special award. I feel this really shows how far Kansas City has come to make the LGBT community a part of the whole community and not a separate group.
Most of all I want to thank everyone who attended. For those of you who were unable to attend the evening, you missed a great time.
I could go on and talk about other things that have occurred, but it is time to look to the future. 2010 is knocking on the door and right behind it is 2011. Four years ago our club was very active in the Elections of 2006 and the City Elections of 2007. We again need to gear ourselves up for another round of elections. 2008 provided to be an important election year, and PRIDE was very active. Our community and our straight allies made a huge difference in every level of elections. We again must be an active part. The primary will be held in August of 2010, with the General Election in November. We will be screening candidates for endorsements sometime in the spring. We need volunteers who would like to be on that screening committee. In Mid-November of 2010 will screen for the City Elections and again we will need to have volunteers.
Remember the key to our club is membership driven endorsement, so if you want to be a part of this process, you have to belong to the club, so join now.
Sincerely
John “Coach” Comstock
